A normal morning in the Montessori classroom at MCHS consists of 25 students potentially doing 25 different things at any given time. The classrooms are large, open and airy, with a wall of windows and a sea of child-sized wood tables and chairs. Shelves are arranged with a variety of materials and each classroom has child-sized sinks and water fountains. The children are allowed to choose the work they want to do, selecting from among the many lessons that they have each received. As the children work, the guide and assistant circulate as necessary through the room assisting only where necessary. The guide determines when a child is ready to receive a new, progressively more advanced and more complex lesson. Lessons are given in practical life, language, sensorial, mathematics and geography, exposing children to the full range of materials available in the classroom.
At any one moment, two children might be in the courtyard raking. Two others might be seated at a table, next to the window overlooking the courtyard while they help themselves to the snack of crackers, apples and cheese available that day.
One student might be sitting on a chair watching the classroom bird, rabbit, or fish. Another child sits at a table with the guide, receiving a new lesson, while a younger child chooses to stand just to the side, watching. Three children sit on the small couch, looking through books together. There are two or three groups of one or two children, working on lessons meant to be used on the floor, on mats they have rolled out on top of the carpet. The rest of the children are seated at tables throughout the room, each accommodating one to four children, visiting with one another while they go about their work. There is a steady hum of sound and activity in the room. Children move freely throughout the room, interacting with their classmates, respecting their work space, observing the work done by others. The classroom is a center of harmonious activity.
The school has 75 students, of diverse backgrounds, between the ages of 3 and 6 years, and a staff of 11. Each of the three primary classrooms has one guide (teacher) and one assistant. The school also offers a Before and After Care (BAC) program in a separate classroom.
Children attend class 5 days a week. The Before School Care is open from 7:30 – 8:15 am. All of the students arrive and are in their Montessori classroom by 8:30 am, where they all remain until 11:45 am. At that time, the younger students either go home or remain at the school for BAC.
The older, extended day students remain in the Montessori classroom until 2:30 pm, after which they may either go home or join the younger students in BAC which remains open until 6:00 pm.
