Some “Fresh” Ideas on Packing Your Child’s Lunch

Are you challenged by packing a lunch every day? Do you feel like you are sending the same thing every day? Here are a few suggestions and perhaps a few new ideas!

•Ham or turkey and cheese roll-ups •Shelled boiled eggs •Celery stuffed with peanut butter or pimento cheese •Cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit •Cheese and crackers •Raw vegetables and dip •Hummus with pita bread

Suggested sandwich fillings:

Peanut butter with: •Sliced banana •Unsweetened applesauce

Tuna fish with: •mayonnaise •Sliced avocado •Chopped celery Cream Cheese with: •Chopped nuts •Sliced cucumbers

MCHS will warm food that is wrapped in aluminum foil by placing it in the oven. (Be sure to write your child’s name on the foil.) Wrapping food in foil or warming it yourself and placing it in a small, wide-mouthed thermos is a wonderful way to ensure your child will get a hot lunch at school.

Try: •Baked chicken •Tortillas with cheese/chicken/beef/ beans •Grilled cheese sandwich •Hot dog •Pasta •Rice with lentils •Cooked vegetables such as corn on the cob or green beans •Macaroni and cheese •Leftovers such as pizza or casserole

Try making the lunch the night before and refrigerating it to make your morning easier. Let your child be a part of the process. You are more likely to send something that your child will like if she or he helps decide what to send. What’s on the Menu? Are you frustrated when thinking of creative news ideas while packing lunch? We thought so. We’ve polled some of our students about their favorite on-the-go meal. Hope this inspires you.
